Willie Lawrence Jackson, known as W.L., was born on December 14, 1934 in Burns Flat, Oklahoma to J.T. Jackson and Jewel (McAllister) Jackson. He passed from this life on Sunday, August 14, 2022 in Yukon, Oklahoma.
W.L. graduated from Burns Flat Schools in 1953. He played baseball and in 1950 and 1951 they won the State Championship. He then attended Southwestern State University on a baseball scholarship, setting several records, some that to this day haven’t been broken.
On September 1, 1956, he married the love of his life, Gwen Brown, in Burns Flat, Oklahoma. This year they would have celebrated 66 years of life together.
After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree, he worked for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas as a mathematician for a time. Then worked for Republic Exploration out of Tulsa in seismograph, moving all over Kansas and Oklahoma. He then earned his Master’s Degree in Education and first taught in Cooperton, Oklahoma, where he was the principal, coach, bus driver, and janitor. Then for a year he was the superintendent for Navajo Schools, before he became the superintendent of Am-Po Schools, retiring after 30 years.
W.L. was a 60-year Mason and a member of Oklahoma Association of Retired Administrators. He enjoyed cooking out for his fellow superintendents and loved picnics and family gatherings. He was an avid Yankee’s fan. After retirement, he spent his time planting crepe myrtles (he had over a hundred), collecting baseball caps, and traveling. He and Gwen had traveled to every state. He loved well and enjoyed life. He will be greatly missed.
