Funeral services for Thelma Gertrude (O’Briant) Opitz, 90, of Chickasha, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 23, 2017 in the Epworth United Methodist Church in Chickasha.

Thelma Gertrude (O’Briant) Opitz was born on May 27, 1927 in Binger, Oklahoma, the daughter of David O’Briant and Gertrude (England) O’Briant. She died on September 20, 2017 in Chickasha, Oklahoma.

Thelma grew up in the Binger area and graduated from Binger High School in May 1946.

Thelma married Gearhart William “Chic” Opitz on December 21, 1947 in Hinton, Oklahoma. To this union, she was blessed with five wonderful children.

Thelma’s hobbies included reading, working in her flowerbed, and making quilts. She embroidered ten state bird quilts and gave one to each child and grandchild. Thelma also embroidered one quilt of the fifty state flowers.

Thelma worked for the Chickasha Public Schools in the Intermediate Library.

She was a member of the Epworth Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Wedding Ring Sunday School Class, Yet Set group and the Terrific Tuesday Group

Thelma was preceded by her parents; husband; son, Timothy; five brothers, Ray, Walter, Chester, Carl and J.E., three sisters, Mildred Kirksey, Marie Lanier and Grace Wildey; and several nieces and nephews.

Survivors include her sons, Michael Opitz and wife Patricia of Locust Grove, Oklahoma, Mark Opitz of Gallatin, Tennessee, Brian Opitz of Fort Worth, Texas; daughter, Marilyn Aiken and husband Calvin of Fort Worth, Texas; grandchildren Derek Opitz and wife Mindy, Michelle Stone and husband Louis, Destiny Opitz, Christina Aiken and husband Stephen Bogadi, Susan Aiken; three great grandchildren, Anne and William Stone and Gabe Opitz; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.

Interment will be in Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
