Funeral services for Stephen Ray Base, 74, of Chickasha, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 in the Plainview Mennonite Church.
Stephen Ray Base was born on October 6, 1946 in Chickasha, Oklahoma to Orval Base and Helen (Koehn) Base. He died on Thursday, December 10, 2020 in Chickasha, Oklahoma.
Stephen grew up in and around Chickasha, graduating from Chickasha High School in 1964.
On February 19, 1965, he married Wanda “Sue” Johnson in Chickasha.
Stephen was an auto body repairman and mechanic all of his life. He first worked for Ferguson Pontiac for over ten years. Then he was self-employed for more than 20 years and most recently worked for the Chickasha and Middleburg public schools as a transportation maintenance mechanic, retiring from Middleburg Public Schools four years ago.
He loved fishing and his passion was working on old cars, in particular, his ’69 Mustang Mach-1 and his ’67 Mustang Fastback (he may have loved those two cars more than his kids). We could always find him tinkering in the garage at home. He also loved spending time with his family, especially his grandkids and great-grandkids.
Stephen was preceded in death by both parents, his wife, Sue Base and two brothers Merl Base and Kenneth Base.
He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Cheryl and Keith Urban of Chickasha and Tamara and Scott Smith of DeRidder, Louisiana; son and daughter-in-law Steven L. and Kris Base of Apache; sister and brother-in-law Janie and Vernon Crabtree of Missouri; grandchildren Brooke and Colt Smith of Rush Springs, Krista and Christian McCarthey of Moore, Kylie and Kelsey Classen of DeRidder, Brandy and Sherwin Schmidt of DeRidder, Preston Smith of DeRidder, Tatum Base of Fletcher, and Teagun Base of Apache; two great-grandchildren Blake Smith and Chayse Smith of Rush Springs; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Sharon Johnson, Joyce and Gary Nichols, David and Diane Schmidt, Janie Johnson, Sandy and Andy Chaney, Kathy and Royce Ferrell, Mike and Tina Johnson, Karen and Mike Lennier and Judith Base Bogdan; and other extended family and friends.
Interment in the Plainview Mennonite Cemetery will be under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
