Memorial services for Phyllis Dawn Wood, 85, of Mead, formerly of Chickasha, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 in the First Baptist Church, located at 324 W. Colorado in Chickasha, Oklahoma with Pastor Michael Butler officiating.
Phyllis Dawn (Roark) Wood, known as Dawn, was born January 15, 1934 in Elizabethton, Tennessee to Martin Luther Roark and Lyde (Davis) Roark. She died Sunday, October 20, 2019 in Calera, Oklahoma.
Dawn grew up and graduated high school in Elizabethton, Tennessee. She graduated from Baptist Nursing School in Memphis, Tennessee and was a registered nurse.
On May 14, 1955, she married Dr. James “J. O.” Wood, Jr. and they were married for 64 years.
They moved to Chickasha in 1964, where Dawn made a home for their family. She attended and participated with their children’s activities as they were growing up. Later after living in Chickasha and being members of the community for many years, Dawn and J.O. moved to Waurika Lake until 2015. They then moved and resided in the Texoma area. They enjoyed traveling, fishing, and running horses. Dawn loved to shop, especially for shoes and purses; she had a matching purse for every outfit.
She was preceded in death by both parents; son, Mark Wood; grandson, Logan Cole; brothers, Dickie Roark and Ken Roark; and sister-in-law, Nola Jean Anderson.
Survivors include her husband, J.O. Wood, Jr., of the home; son, James O. Wood III of New Orleans, Louisiana; daughter, Melinda (Wood) Cole of Decatur, Texas; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and other extended family and friends.
Services and cremation arrangements are under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
Interment will be at a later date in Rose Hill Cemetery.
