Funeral Services for Matthew Lee Hoyt, 46, of Chickasha, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2018 in the Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel with The Reverend Lin Stern officiating.
Matthew Lee Hoyt was born August 12, 1972 in Fort Ord, California, born to Ellen Kay (Williams) Scott and Glenn V. Hoyt, Jr. He passed away suddenly on Thursday, August 30, 2018 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Matt was the happiest baby, always with a smile and a cheerful attitude. As Matt was growing up the family lived in many different states and towns because Matt’s father was in the Army and later a preacher; yet he never met a stranger and was very personable.
In 1990, Matt graduated from high school in Cordell, Oklahoma. He had worked his senior year for the local funeral home mowing lawns and helping with flowers. He then went to Chickasha, Oklahoma to attend USAO and it was there that he met Rebecca Smith. They were married on December 8, 1992 and had two children, Matthew Samuel Hoyt and Molly Ann Hoyt.
Matt went back to Cordell and worked for Jack Loftis at the local funeral home. Jack saw the potential Matt had and encouraged him to go to mortuary science school and become a funeral director. Matt attended and graduated from UCO in Edmond with a Degree in Mortuary Science. Matt had a jovial and joking personality, yet he took his work seriously and felt it to be a ministry from God. He was good at giving comfort to grieving families and was good at what he did. He moved to Norman and worked for Vondel L. Smith & Son Mortuary in Oklahoma City on and off for about 8 years. In 2002, he began working for Hart Funeral Home in Stilwell, Oklahoma. While in Stilwell, he was President of the Kiwanis Club and Chairman of the Strawberry Parade Committee. He went to the Methodist Church in Stilwell for a time and later to the 1st Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Arkansas.
Matt and his family moved back to Norman in 2009 and they attended St. John’s Episcopal Church. He worked for a mortuary service in Oklahoma City for several years before moving to Chickasha and working for Ferguson Funeral Home in April of 2016. He felt it was his dream job and really enjoyed his work.
He met “his person” and life partner, Jeni Richardson in the summer of 2015 and they quickly became inseparable. They had many laughs and faced life together, joining their families as one.
Matt never said a negative word about anyone and he was the kindest and most compassionate man. He would do anything for anyone. A glimpse of Matt would be in the story the family remembers of him one day bringing home a casket and using it as a coffee table and later building shelves in it and using it as an entertainment center. He had a quirky personality and a great spirit. Matt had an intricate interest in music and movies and he kept up will all the current events and news.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, Homer Williams, Viola Williams, and Glenn Hoyt, Sr and step-brother, James E. Scott.
Survivors include his children and life partner of the home, Sam Hoyt, Molly Hoyt, Mary Sue Leppert and Jeni Richardson; step-son, Jeremy Sennett of Phoenix, Arizona; mother and step-father, Ellen and Jim Scott of Altus; brother and sister-in-law, Christopher and Heidi Hoyt of Shawnee; sisters and brothers-in-law, Cathy and Bobby Gonzales and Helena and Heath Syfert, all of Cordell; step-sisters, Melinda Scott of Belle Plaine, Kansas and Bobbie Gott of Joplin, Missouri; step-brother, Thomas Scott of Cordell; mother of his children, Rebecca Smith of Norman; numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family and friends.
Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
