Funeral services for Margaret Bernice Jervis, 88, of Moore, formerly of Chickasha, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, 2019 in the Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel.
Margaret Bernice Jervis was born to Rosie Lee (Tindel) Berry and Willie Syburn Berry, the 24th day of February 1931 in Agawam, Oklahoma. She passed away on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 in Moore, Oklahoma.
Margaret attended grade school at Agawam and High School at Ninnekah, Oklahoma. She studied Business Administration at Oklahoma University and Oklahoma School of Banking and Business at Oklahoma City. After she furthered her education by going to college and Business College, she still felt the need to go back high school and earn her high school diploma in 1961; she received the much earned diploma at Dibble High School in Dibble, Oklahoma.
She married Walter Finis Jervis May 21st 1948 in Chickasha, Oklahoma at a preacher’s home. They moved to Tuttle and Minco communities where they established and successfully ran a farm and a Grade A Dairy till 1956. Margaret and Finis successfully raised 3 boys. Finis preceded her in death in October 1986.
Margaret worked as a telephone operator at Blanchard and Norman. She was good at her job and became assistant chief operator, within 2 years which was quite an accomplishment. She was chosen best in her field out of 35 women. She was always trying to increase her income and advance herself and work to her full potential. She took a job as a lab technician assistant at Oklahoma University on a government secret research grant, Margaret accomplished much. From there she went to Tinker Air Force Base, where she attended many classes. Some special opportunities were to be asked to go to Washington D.C. to represent her unit on a project. She was at brunch one morning with senators and congressmen when President Nixon came by and talked with them for a few minutes. It was an honor for a country girl from Agawam, Oklahoma.
While Margaret worked at Tinker, she was WG 10 Step 3 she cleared the bases to help with her family. After 5 years as a house wife she became bored and returned to work at Tinker again. After attending many classes again, she retained her grade as a WG 10 Step 5 and retained as such, which is one of the higher grades in Civil Service, retiring from Tinker Air Force Base in 1991.
Margaret Bernice Jervis had always been a curious and adventurous person about the unknown, wanting to see and find out things for herself. She became involved in activities at Rose State College, especially the watering hole (as she jokingly calls the swimming pool), she likes swimming, water volleyball and loves water skiing, and she likes water sports most of all. She enjoys movies, music and reading, especially the National Geographic, which fed her hunger for travel, knowledge and curiosity that she always had to meet new people and know about their customs and countries. She traveled to all 50 states, Canada, Old Mexico, the Caribbean and Bahamas. And farther out to New Zealand, Australia, Holland, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France and England. Old age was getting to her and she had to take a rest, then off to Greece and Turkey. When she returned to the United States, she wanted to kiss the ground of the good old America. Very, very tired of foreign countries, going through customs and changing currency, she still traveled but only in the good old United States.
When she was young her favorite sports were basketball, softball and track, she participated in all of those sports and did them to the best of her abilities. Her hobbies were crocheting, oil painting, sewing, upholstering, fixing old furniture, garage sales, flea markets and bargain hunting. One of her friends went to a garage sale and she said they were in the garage, ain’t that where they belong???? She never could pass up a bargain no matter what it was.
Margaret always said she believed in GOD and that he gives you a road to travel when you are born, and she put herself in his hands to assist her to travel this road all through her life, and the knowledge to accept all things good and bad in her life. Now that she is old and gone, she was ready to travel down her last earthly adventure in life’s journey into the unknown.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son Barry Kendall Jervis; three brothers: Ervin Cecil Berry, Albert Vernon Berry and Jackie Dean Berry, all of Agawam; three sisters: Dorothy Lampchret of Chickasha, Fay Lorene Robins of Lindsay, Erma Josephine Britton of Ninnekah and Vera Collins of Agawam.
