Funeral services for Lucille Marie (Alves) Hay, 84, of Alex, will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Sue Lykins officiating.
Lucille Marie (Alves) Hay was born October 21, 1930 in Hayward, California to parents, Walter Joseph Alves and Lucille Marie (Gallamore) Alves. She died Thursday, July 2, 2015 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Lucy attended schools in Livermore and Hayward, California, graduating with honors from Hayward Union High in 1948. She then entered nurses training in September 1948 at Mount Zion Hospital School of Nursing in San Francisco and upon completion of her three year training, she was capped as a Registered Nurse.
She enlisted in the U. S. Navy and her commission as an officer was televised on Jack Parr’s program through a San Francisco TV station. She was assigned to the Navy base in Jacksonville, Florida and served two years there. She then requested to transfer to the U. S. Navy base in Norman, Oklahoma because her parents and sister were in the process of moving from California to Wayne, Oklahoma. At the end of three years in Norman, she received orders to Japan where she served two years, and while there she climbed Mount Fuji and saw the sunrise. She then was transferred to Corpus Christi for two more years. While in Corpus Christi, she married Jim Brasseaux. They had a daughter, Sharon, and at that time she was not allowed to stay in the Navy with a dependent. So after nine years of active duty service and as a Korean War veteran, she was honorably discharged and the young family moved to Oklahoma City.
After moving to Oklahoma, she worked for a short time at Capitol Hill General Hospital, and then began a 30 year career at Veterans Medical Center in Oklahoma City. She retired with a total of 39 years serving as a Registered Nurse.
She had later married Donald Hay and they eventually moved to Alex and at his passing in 2005; they had been married for thirty-five years.
Lucy was a member of the United Methodist Church in Alex and had been a member of the Order of Eastern Star-Purcell Chapter for 50 years. She enjoyed having lunch at the Dibble Senior Center and attending their outings, often driving to the various events with her friend Lavern Rodgers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Lucille Alves; infant sister, Betty Jean Alves, brother, Jack Dow; and two husbands, Jim Brasseaux and Donald H. Hay.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Shoemaker; granddaughter, Alissa (Shoemaker) Brummett, her husband, Josh and their two children, Canaan and Ashlynn; granddaughter, Heather Shoemaker of the U.S. Navy and her wife, Ashley; sister, Myrna (Alves) Moore and her husband, Larry; half-sister, June Rinta; nephew, Rex Duncan and his wife, Amy, and their four daughters, Ava, Elise, Grace, and Eliott; sisters-in-law, Sue Hay and Carolyn Pendergraft; nieces, Cindy Ramirez, Nancy Gibbon, Janine Kelley, and Melinda Moses and their families; nephews, Chris Hay, Tommy Hay, and Mitch Moses and his family; as well as other extended family and friends.

Services and interment are in Purcell’s Hillside Cemetery are under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
