Funeral services for LaHoma Nora (Miller) Spurlin, 89, of Chickasha, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2022 in the Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Kim Hayes officiating.

LaHoma Nora (Miller) Spurlin was born October 20, 1932 in Chickasha, Oklahoma to John Miller and Reva Mae (Dickenson) Miller. She passed from this life on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 in Chickasha, Oklahoma.

In 1950, she graduated from Chickasha High School, where she was a Pepette Pep Club and head cheerleader her senior year and was in the Junior play.

LaHoma married James Edward Spurlin in November 1952 and to this union her two sons, Timothy Mark and Shawn “Kirk” were born. While they were married, they worked together over the years serving the community, working the farm and raising their boys. LaHoma also worked as a telephone switchboard operator, for Chickasha Bank and Trust and for the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce.

As a young married woman, she was stricken with polio but under the care of doctors and a lot of prayers she made a full recovery. At the age of 10 years old, she became a Christian during a summer revival and as an adult she served the Lord in many ways. She was a member of College Heights Baptist Church for many years and held many positions and to summarize her words, she was “always a leader never just a participant.”

LaHoma was a member of the Meridian and Grady County Extension Homemakers Group for 32 years and served as secretary/treasurer for several years and was elected as treasurer for 2 years for the Oklahoma Extension Homemakers.

She was an excellent cook and won a blue ribbon at the Oklahoma State Fair for her chocolate cake. She was also very involved in the Grady County and Caddo County fairs, winning many ribbons for her sewing, fixing educational exhibits, helping with the 4-H judging and volunteering. She was the first female to serve on the Electric Co-op in Oklahoma. She served on several committees and boards throughout her lifetime, serving her community and state.

After her divorce in 1984, she moved to Dallas, where she worked for Goodman’s Mortgage Company and in gift-wrapping at department stores on the weekends. She also babysat the Clancy children and they adopted her into their family and introduced her to the Stephen Jones family with whom she traveled and looked after their children. At the same time, she worked for Electronic Data Systems as a message center operator and loved this work, making many friends and overseas connections and earning promotions.

LaHoma returned to Chickasha in 2002 to be close to her grandson Kody and watch him play sports. She spent time working at Epworth day care and later caring for the elderly. In August 2007, she started working for Marshall Auto Parts and enjoyed it, retiring in August 2017.

She was preceded in death by her parents and loving step-parents John and Thelma Miller and Reva and Bill Elsey and her sons’ father James Spurlin.

She will be missed by son Tim Spurlin and wife Mary of Chickasha; son Kirk Spurlin and wife Neena of Chickasha; grandchildren and their spouses Timothy and Melissa Spurlin, Shauna and Jake Goff, Kody and Kristen Spurlin; step-granddaughters Kenna Aldridge and husband Keaton and Anna Cornell; “adopted” grandson Brandon Shumway; great-grandchildren Karma, Phoenix, Sera, Asher, Emma, Kayson, Kade, Kylan, Korbin, Chance and Chase; Kody’s mother Karla Shumway and husband Brad; stepbrother Dean “Sonny” Powell and wife Jane; stepsisters Mary Helen Delozier and husband Pete, Loretta Melton, Ruthie Barber and husband Larry; adopted Texas family Tom and Frankie Clancy, Katlin, Joey and Jack; numerous step nieces and nephews and other extended family and friends.
