Memorial services for John Edward Melencamp, 90, of Chickasha, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 31, 2016 in the Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel.
John Edward Melencamp was born on October 6, 1926 in Anadarko, Oklahoma, the son of John Christian Melencamp and Zula Mae (Darden) Melencamp. He died on October 27, 2016 in Lawton, Oklahoma.
John attended Washita Schools and at the age of seventeen, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served during WWII and the Korean Conflict before he was medically retired from service.
On November 10, 1953, John married Norma Rogers in Fort Cobb, Oklahoma. They were married 62 years.
John lived the majority of his life in Anadarko and then retired to Chickasha around 1997. He loved the military and served in offices of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War (VFW). He served as President of the Disabled American Veteran (DAV). He also enjoyed golf and bowling.
He was preceded in death by both his parents, one brother Noble Melencamp, two sisters Ruby Melencamp and Earlene Lyon and his son, Garry Melencamp.
Survivors include his wife, Norma, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Fran Melencamp of Chickasha; daughter and son-in-law, Danita and Mike Palesano of Chickasha; son, Jeff Melencamp of Cleburne, Texas; eight grandchildren Eric Melencamp, Danita Melencamp, Jacob Melencamp, Michael and wife, Tracy Palesano, Daniel Palesano, Matt and wife, Whitney Palesano, Nicci and husband, Jared Jantz and Tyra McLaughlin and numerous great-grandchildren; and other extended family and friends.
Interment will be in Ft. Sill National Cemetery in Elgin, Oklahoma.
Services and cremation arrangements are under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
