With four sisters and being the only boy, he was spoiled and very well loved by his sisters and his parents. John grew up in Chickasha and attended Lincoln School.
He was drafted January 23, 1946 into the United States Army, just after the end of World War II. He served in Korea, as one of the first troops to clear the way for other servicemen coming into Korea, and 25 years later his son, Horace Alexander, served in the same area and 50 years later his granddaughter, Kala Alexander, also served in Korea. John loved the United States and proudly served his country.
On August 31, 1949, John married Laura Bell (McDonald) Alexander and they were married 45 years until her passing on April 14, 1995. To this blessed union nine children were born.
John accepted Christ at a young age while at Mount Olive Baptist Church and later joined Shepherd Street Christian Church. While under the leadership of Reverend JB Holmes, he became an ordained minister and had ministered at First Baptist Church in Chickasha and Greater First Baptist Church in Anadarko. He also served on the pastoral staff at Parchester First Baptist Church in Richmond, California.
He was a hard worker, sometimes working three jobs to provide well for his family. John was a car porter for Ralph and Sons Oldsmobile, maintenance for Pool Mortgage Company, and bartender at the Elks Lodge. In March 1965, he opened John’s BBQ, his lifelong dream, with the support of his wife and children. For twenty-nine years he contributed to the community with his business and good-eats, retiring in 1994.
John was very involved in the neighborhood and community through local sports such as Little League Baseball and supporting the Chickasha High School activities.
In 1996, he married Bernice Broadway Alexander.
