Funeral services for Jewel Nettie Givens, 98 of Chickasha will be held at 1:00 p.m. February 29, 2020 at the Grady County Fairgrounds with Elder James McRae officiating.

Jewel Nettie Givens was born January 18, 1922 in Hugo Oklahoma, the daughter of Brolie Lee and Mary McCoy. She passed away Thursday, February 20, 2020 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Jewel was born and raised in Hugo, Oklahoma. She grew up during the times of the dust bowl and Great Depression. Although, Jewel began working at an early age of only 5 years old, she stayed involved in her studies with math being her favorite. She completed school in Hugo, Oklahoma.

Jewel relocated to Chickasha, Oklahoma in the early 1940’s at the age of 19 years old. Shortly after moving she met James Reece Givens whom she married in 1943. Jewel and James made their home in Chickasha, Oklahoma, purchased their first home, had 12 children, and 55 years together until his passing in 1998.

Jewel worked as a longtime cook at Andy’s Café. She soon made a career of caring for others. She worked at the Idaho Nursing Center and Shanoan Springs Nursing Center for many years, she later worked as a private caregiver, taking care of patients in their home, finally retiring at 75 years old.

Jewel attended the Chickasha Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was baptized in 1947, becoming a lifetime member. Jewel loved to cook, crochet and quilt blankets. She loved being a mother. She taught her children to be independent, goal driven, and to always do the right thing. He children recall some of their favorites such as the warm hot rolls after school and the yearly summer roads trips to California. Jewel was famous for her Graham Cracker Pie which her family loved, and the handmade blankets she made for her family and friends. Jewel was not just famous for her great pies, warm hot meals and rolls, but her warm heart as well. Jewel welcomed all into her home, provided a helping hand to anyone in need.

Jewel was preceded in death by; both parents, her husband James Givens, daughter Janice Sledge, son Jarvis Givens, granddaughters Estelle Sledge and Jewel Givens, and all her siblings.

Survivors include her children and their spouses Joyce Givens of Chickasha, Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Givens of Long Beach, California, Dr. and Mrs. James Givens of Augusta, Georgia, Jerry Givens and Linda of Bellflower, California, Jacqueline and Mitchel Bowels of Las Vegas, Nevada, Debra Givens of Chickasha, Dollie Maytubby and Wayne Jones of Chickasha, Mary Alice Givens of Long Beach, California, Everett Givens of Chickasha and Maria Givens of Chickasha; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and, great, great-grandchildren.

A Matriarch of her family of six generations.

Interment will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
