A memorial service for James “Jim” Russell Hobgood, 88, of Anadarko, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 23, 2024 at the Verden First Baptist Church.
James Russell Hobgood was born July 1, 1936 in Blanchard, Oklahoma to Russell Ray Hobgood and Elba Devear (Haynes) Hobgood. He passed from this life on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at his home, east of Anadarko, Oklahoma.
Jim grew up in Oklahoma City. He left high school in the 11 th grade to join the United States Marine Corp and received his GED in the service. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California for five years.
After returning to Oklahoma City, he met Marjorie “Joyce” Milam and they married on April 15, 1962, and to this union three children were born.
Jim enjoyed anything to do with horses but especially team roping. He won countless buckles, saddles and money competing. When the kids were young, he coached little league. He was a member of the Elks Lodge. He liked hunting fishing and spending time at the lake. He loved to dance and was a square dancer. He was a member of Verden Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by both parents, brothers Robert Allen Hobgood and Ronnie Paul Hobgood, sister Kathy Laverne Hobgood, granddaughter Sheena Lynn Secrest, grandson Travis Lee Cunningham, and son-in-law Terry Dean Cunningham.
Loved ones left to remember him are his daughter Tammy Cunningham of Verden; sons Alan Hobgood of Anadarko and Mark Hobgood and wife Jo D of Anadarko; sisters Wenoma Vonceal Boatwright of Oklahoma City and Yvonnia Sue Minton of Las Vegas, Nevada; grandchildren Levi, TJ, Heaven, Tommy and Samantha; seven great-grandchildren; his prized horse Slingshot; and other extended family and friends.
The service and cremation arrangements are under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
