Freddie graduated from New Braunfels, Texas High School in May 1938 and was voted the very first Queen of Hearts her senior year.
She married Hayes Benton Thompson on August 5, 1938 in Fredericksburg, Texas and this union lasted 53 years until Hayes’ death on November 3, 1991.
With World War II looming in 1939 and Hayes entering training in the Air Force, Freddie enrolled in Fort Worth Junior College under auspices of War Industries Training Program in Aircraft Drafting. After she received her degree she went to work as a draftsman for Fort Sam Houston Engineering Department in San Antonio, Texas.
From then she went to work for Consolidated Aircraft Company in Fort Worth, Texas until Hayes received his wings as a P47 Pilot, at which time she and the children joined him in Virginia, then New Jersey, then back to Virginia, then home to San Antonio as he was to leave for overseas. After the war Hayes returned to General Motors in Fort Worth then transferred to Jackson, Mississippi, then to New Orleans, Louisiana.
She and Hayes became members of Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in San Antonio shortly after their marriage in 1938 and remained active with both serving and in leadership positions for over 50 years including their time spent in Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Oklahoma.
Freddie served as president of Christian Women’s Fellowship of her respective churches in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Chickasha, Oklahoma. She taught Sunday School and loved teaching children and young people, her favorite age was the Junior High age. One of her favorite things was being a counselor at church camps with Chi Rho ages in all three states. She was a member and past president of PEO Chapter CR. She was an ordained deacon of the First Christian Church, a member of the American Legion, and an avid bridge player.
In November of 1961, she and Hayes purchased the Chevrolet Cadillac Dealership in Chickasha, Oklahoma, planning for the future of oldest son Clayton, who was graduating from OU that year. After Clayton’s death in July of 1963, she and Hayes sold the dealership in 1966. They bought the old Chickasha Hotel in 1965 (to keep it from closing) and they moved to the Hotel and converted it to apartments for which there was a dire need. There was a restaurant, barber shop, beauty shop, several offices, such as the tag office and employment office. Freddie worked tirelessly for the next forty years at the Hotel, using her artistic talents, energy and love of people, making many friends in the process.
