Dean Guthrie

d. June 20, 2024

A funeral service for Aubrey Dean Guthrie, 76, of Amber, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 in the First Baptist Church of Amber with Ezell Nelson officiating.

Aubrey Dean Guthrie was born July 9, 1947 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma to Harold H Guthrie and Wanda Lee (Beck) Guthrie. He passed from this life surrounded by his loved ones on June 20, 2024, at his home in Amber, Oklahoma.

Dean grew up in Wayne, Oklahoma, and graduated from Wayne High School in 1965. He then received a degree from East Central University.

On July 1, 1967, he married Sharon Brooks and they shared almost 57 years together.

After graduating from East Central University, Dean taught for five years at Washington Public School. In 1974, the family moved to Amber, and Dean took a teaching/coaching job at Amber-Pocasset Public Schools, where he served for almost 50 years. He coached baseball until 1994 and basketball until 1998 and taught social studies until he retired in 2010. He continued to drive a school bus for Amber-Pocasset until the spring of 2024.

Amber was home for Dean. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Amber for over 45 years, where he served as deacon for nearly 40 years. He was licensed to preach and ordained to the Gospel ministry and ministered to many families as they laid their loved ones to rest. Additionally, he cared for the church lawn and mowed the Amber and Pocasset cemeteries for a number of years.

Dean poured into many young people through the years, but none more than those in his own family. He was a wonderful, loving father, raising three sons who are as strong-willed as he was. But being “Papa” to his grandchildren was his great joy, and he delighted in each one of them. He was always right, even when he was wrong.

He was preceded in death by his father Harold H Guthrie, mother Wanda Lee Graham, infant son Carey Scott Guthrie, sisters Wanda Harolene Webley and Paula Jo Rollins.

Loved ones left to remember him are his wife Sharon of the home; sons and daughters-in-law Scott and Mandy Guthrie of Amber, David and Amanda Guthrie of Pocasset, and Eric and Brandi Guthrie of Newalla; brother and sister-in-law Dana and Patti Guthrie of Norman; sister and brother-in-law Chris and Larry Wright of Wayne; stepfather Jerry Graham of Wayne; grandchildren Elyse, Ian, Haddon, Phoebe, Chandler, Kenan, Kari, Kylie, and Ezekiel; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.

A visitation with the family receiving friends will be Monday, June 24 th at Ferguson Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

A private interment will be in Amber Cemetery before the service under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
