CraigAnn Ledell Ummel was born July 5, 1943 to MasterSgt. William L Ackerman and Viola Sarah MacKinnon in Lordsburg, New Mexico near Fort Bayard, a facility used to house German POWs. In 1944, her dad was promoted and transferred to Camp Fannin near Tyler, Texas. Camp Fannin was a U.S. Army Infantry Replacement Training Center and housed up to 40,000 POWs.
In late 1944 the family returned to their beloved homeland, Prince Edward Island, Canada and remained there until they returned to Tyler in 1949. CraigAnn’s parents then became naturalized citizens of the United States and remained in Tyler for the duration of their lives. Even though Tyler would become “home”, the family returned to PEI every three years for an extended vacation. The most memorable one was when Queen Elizabeth II paid a visit and met the Chieftan of the MacKinnon Clan who was there from Scotland.
CraigAnn graduated from Robert E. Lee High School. While in high school, CraigAnn competed in the State of Texas Musical Guild and won top honors each year. Following high school (and while her husband, Larry Kent Ummel was on active duty with the Army) CraigAnn graduated from Nursing School with specializations in Emergency Care and surgical nursing. Once Larry completed his active military duty, the family resided in Kilgore, Texas where they continued to live until Larry accepted an administrative position with Texas A&M University. While in Bryan, CraigAnn served as church organist, taught Sunday School and assisted Larry in the formation of the church’s outreach program. From Bryan, the family moved to Beaver, Oklahoma and then to Chickasha.
While at First Baptist Church, CraigAnn served as a Sunday School teacher, taught in the School of the Arts, and was Co-Chairman of the Women’s E-mail Ministry. CraigAnn graduated with a BS from USAO and a Master’s in Human Resource Management from the University of Oklahoma. She was an active member of College Heights Baptist Church.
