Funeral services for Coy Shelton Bush, 75, of Chickasha, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at Grand Assembly of God Church with Larry Hatfield officiating and Jeanne Jones assisting.
Coy Shelton Bush was born November 23, 1940 in Chickasha, Oklahoma, the son of Clyde Pete Bush and Bertha Mae (Bays) Bush. Friday, December 25, 2015, on his favorite holiday, Coy went to be with the Lord while holding Gail’s hand. A lifelong resident of Chickasha, Coy was a master contract plumber for 41 years, as well as a nationally recognized quilter, metal artist, furniture maker, collector, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a friend to anyone in need.
In 1979 he cut out his first quilt in the midst of a snowstorm. Over the years Coy elevated his craft of thread art, becoming a nationally recognized artist in the field of thread painting. His many talents have been displayed in quilt festivals across the country.
Coy’s most famous works have been featured in Oklahoma Today Magazine, on News Channel 4’s “Is This a Great State or What”, at the Cowboy Hall of Fame, Oklahoma State Capitol, The White House in Washington DC, a special display in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, and has also been in the Winner’s Circle in the Houston Quilt Festival twice.
In the spring of 1999, Coy and Gail purchased the Petroleum Building on the corner of 4 th and Chickasha Avenue, and began their restorations. They made their home, on the second floor, a warm and welcoming retreat overlooking downtown Chickasha. Coy loved living on main street.
Coy was an avid collector of BB Guns, he was a lifetime member of the Rogers Daisy Airgun Museum. He dedicated the fifth floor of the Petroleum Building to his collection of vintage airguns and other unique collectibles, reflecting his deep love of history.
Coy was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde P. Bush and Bertha Mae Bush; two brothers, Claude Anthony Bush and Clark Roger Bush; one niece, Darla Hoake Bush; and a grandson, Drake Carlile.
Survivors include his wife, Gail, of the home; son, Pete Bush and wife, Pam, of Chickasha; daughter, BryAnne Carlile and significant other, Randell Doughty, of Chickasha; his grandchildren, who were the light of his life, Evan Bush, Conrad Carlile, Brooks Bush, Mackaby Carlile, and Boston Carlile; one great-grandchild, Parker Grace; brother, Clyde “Buddy” Bush and wife, Gwendene Bush, of Chickasha; sister-in-law, Reta Jo Bush of Chickasha; and in addition a host of nieces and nephews, many close family members, friends, a special sister-in-law, Jeanie Ventris, his quilting harem, as well as his “Petroleum Building family”.
