Funeral services will be held for Charlotte O. “Shirley” Monroe, 81, of Amber, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2016, in the Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel with Bob Gordon officiating and Dean Guthrie assisting.
Charlotte O. “Shirley” Monroe was born October 4, 1934 in the Harold community, near Pocasset, Oklahoma, to H. H. Russell and Ethel (Barnes) Russell. She passed away on April 14, 2016 at her home in Amber, Oklahoma.
She resided in the Harold Community and attended Harold school through the 4 th grade. She then moved to the Meridian community where she graduated in 1952. She was active in 4H and basketball. Shirley was an excellent basketball player, helping lead her team to the Oklahoma state tournament.
She married Donald Monroe on June 1 st , 1952 in Chickasha, and unto that union was born two children, Gary and Linda Monroe.
She worked as a phlebotomist at Grady Memorial Hospital, Southern Plains Clinic and Five Oaks Clinic until her retirement.
Shirley was an active member of the 1 st Baptist Church of Amber where she taught Sunday school and Bible school classes.
Shirley loved the Lord, her family and her country. She was very good with her hands and she loved to crochet and was an excellent cook. Her afghans and baby blankets were gifts to her family and friends. She also loved to garden and raise flowers. She was a kind and loving person and much enjoyed attending her granddaughter’s basketball and softball games. She also loved to travel.
She was preceded in death by both her parents; sister, Bessie Marchbanks and brothers, James, Joe Gene, Larry and Gary Russell.
Survivors include her husband, Donald E. Monroe, of the home; son, Gary Monroe, of Wichita Falls, Texas; daughter, Linda Esgar, of Norman; special loving caregiver, Tammy Monroe, of Tuttle; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and other extended family and friends.
Services and interment in Rose Hill Cemetery are under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
