Buren Oneil Thompson

d. November 15, 2023

A funeral service for Buren Oneil Thompson, 95, of Cement, will be held Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. in the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Cement with Reverend Dewayne Settle officiating and Reverend John Zwolle and Reverend Brian Black assisting.

Buren Oneil Thompson was born December 12, 1927 in Cement, Oklahoma the son of Antone J. Thompson and Myrtle Eva (Grimes) Thompson. He passed from this life on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, in Cement, Oklahoma.

The oldest of 9 children, Buren was raised outside of Cement and graduated from Fairview High School in 1945. Shortly after high school, he moved to Espanola, New Mexico and worked for the government at the Las Alamos National Laboratory constructing buildings at the facility.

On a trip back home to Cement, he met Juanita “Joan” Christian and they were later married on July 4, 1950 in Seminole, Oklahoma. They shared seventy-three years of marriage together.

After settling back in Oklahoma, Buren worked in the commercial construction trade building banks, schools, gyms, churches, and even Grady Memorial Hospital. In addition to construction, he worked cattle and grew wheat on the farm he and Joan bought in 1952, until he finally got the chance to retire.

In retirement, he spent hours woodworking in his shop and traveling in their motorhome from Alaska to Florida and spots in between. He and Joan would spend months at a time in Arizona and other places attending craft fairs to sell many of the items he would create in the shop or to learn something new.

Buren loved fishing – especially with his brothers and sisters.  And he was definitely a John Deere man. Even after selling off the tractors, his mowers were still green.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Antone J. Thompson and Myrtle Eva (Grimes) Thompson; son Russell Wayne Thompson; sisters, Beatrice Hice, Wanda Emdy, Faye Grotsma, and Joyce Jackson; brothers, Wilburn Thompson, Harold Thompson, Max Thompson, and A.J. Thompson; and son-in-law Tim Love.

Loved ones left to remember Buren are his wife Juanita “Joan” Thompson of the home; daughters and sons-in-law Jeanie and Jimmy Wear of Midwest City, Janice and Dewayne Settle of Wellston, Glenda and Buster Chaney of Cement, and Diana Love of Cement; daughter-in-law, Becky Thompson of Cyril; eight grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

He was much loved by his family and respected by his friends and will be greatly missed.

A viewing for Buren will be held at Ferguson Funeral Home on Monday, November 20, 2023, from 8:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Interment will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
