Funeral services for Arthur Richard Self, 70, of Chickasha, will be held Friday, January 15, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel.
Arthur Richard Self, known as Art, was born December 11, 1945 in Sentinel, Oklahoma, the son of Arthur Self and Inez Elaine (Allard) Self. He died Tuesday, January 12, 2016 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Art attended Cordell Public Schools, graduating in 1964. While in high school he served as Class President, was voted most congenial, played football for all four years and was the lead trumpet player in the band. He then went to Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, graduating in 1969 with a double major in physical education and industrial technology.
After college, Art moved back to Cordell and helped his family in their retail furniture store and after his father’s death, he expanded the business to two stores. After selling the furniture stores in 1987, he was employed with DHS, where he worked in the pilot program, developing job placement for handicapped individuals, retiring in 2001. While in Cordell, he served as Ward I Councilman for six years, as President of the Planning and Resources Board for eight years. Art was very involved in civic affairs. He was recognized as one of the ten most outstanding Jaycee’s Young Businessmen of Oklahoma.
On June 24, 1995 he married Rosemary “Terry” Johnsen in Cordell. They moved to Chickasha, where he attended St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Self and his mother, Inez Elaine Self, and one grandchild, Wesley Hernandez.
Survivors include his wife and life companion, Rosemary “Terry”, of Chickasha; daughters and sons-in-law, Hillary B. Self of Santa Monica, California, Heather Dawn and Marc Morris of Choctaw, Heidi Ann and Chris Hoyt of Shawnee and Haley N. and Russell Hernandez of Corpus Christi, Texas; stepchildren, Julia Resnick, John Bivins and Jim Bivins; grandchildren, William Hernandez, Wyatt Hernandez, Weston Hernandez, Ike Hoyt, Ace Morris, and two adopted by heart grandchildren, “Baby Girl Morris” and “Baby Boy Morris”; six step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren ; and other extended family and friends.
Services and interment in Lawnview Cemetery, Cordell, Oklahoma are under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
