A celebration of life for Alton Mark Rawlins, 69, of Chickasha will be held Thursday, March 21, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. in the Southern Oaks Church of Christ in Chickasha.

Alton Mark Rawlins was born June 24, 1954 in Liberal, Kansas the son of Orville Rawlins and Berdine (Shiflett) Rawlins. He passed from this life, Monday, March 18, 2024 in Chickasha surrounded by his family.

Alton grew up in Hooker Oklahoma.  While attending school he set many individual High School track records. He graduated from Hooker High School in 1972. Later he attended Oklahoma Christian University on a track scholarship where he ran cross country and track. Alton graduated from Oklahoma Christian University and later obtained his Master’s Degree at the University of Central Oklahoma.

He married Jan Ansley in 1974 and from this union Terry, De, & Ace Rawlins were born.

After graduation from Oklahoma Christian, Alton was employed with Fairview, Dover, Kingfisher and Beaver Schools. After accepting a job at Tuttle Public Schools, he met Debby at the Tuttle Church of Christ and they were married there on July 23, 1987.

Alton was very active in the Church of Christ. He volunteered with the youth activities and loved working with the young children in his Pew Packers program, singing with them before evening services. He enjoyed organizing and leading youth mission trips, participating in Vacation Bible School, singing at every opportunity and served as a deacon at the Southern Oaks Church of Christ.

Alton was also very active in coaching.  He coached football, basketball, and track. He was also a very active FFA parent.  During Alton’s time in the school systems, he touched many children’s lives. Alton was a school administrator in Alex, Cheyenne, Chickasha and Friend School systems. While teaching he enjoyed Science and Biology. When Alton retired, he drove a school bus just to stay involved with the schools.

When Alton wasn’t working, he enjoyed playing golf, going to the lake, singing hymns, and spending time with his grandchildren. He also loved his two dogs Tater and Tot, and will forever be known as never meeting a stranger.

Alton is preceded in death by his father, Orville Rawlins; son, Joe Leggett; grandsons, Trace Williams and Bryson Rawlins; brother, Lelan Rawlins; nephew, Phillip Norman; mother-in-law, Thelma Johnston and father-in-law, Jude Johnston.

Loved ones left to remember Alton include his mother, Berdine Rawlins of Hooker; spouse, Debby Rawlins of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Jason and Melissa Leggett of Amber; Terry Rawlins of Oklahoma City, and Ace and Hannah Rawlins of Ninnekah; daughter De Williams of White Hall, Arkansas; brother and sister-in-law, Galen and LoraLe Rawlins of Hutchinson, Kansas; sister-in-law JoAnn Rawlins of Hooker; sisters and brothers-in-laws, Leta and Richard Roberts of Hooker and Nancy and Joel Norman of Luther; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Rick and Rhonda Johnston of Chickasha; ten grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family.

Viewing will be Wednesday, March 20 th at Ferguson Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Interment will be in Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
